Global Seafloor topography from Satellite Altimetry
Maps of seafloor elevation based on data collected by satellites. The satellite can't "see" the bottom of the ocean, instead it measures the elevation of the ocean and infers the shape of the seafloor. It seems like magic, but it's really science. See how cleverly it's done.

The Paleogeographic Atlas Project
Site contains maps showing the distributions of tectonic plates over geologic time. Unlike other sites that only show changes in the position of the tectonic plates, the paleogeographic reconstructions here show changes in the distribution of oceans vs. land.

Map viewers and data

Viewers

3DEM
"3DEM will create 3D terrain scenes and flyby animations and export GIS terrain data files using any of the following freely available terrain data as a source.
USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) files
USGS Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS DEM) files
USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) files
USGS Global 30 Arc Second Elevation Data Set (GTOPO30 DEM) files
NOAA Global Land One-km Base Elevation (GLOBE) files
     GEOTIFF Digital Elevation Models
NASA Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) files
NASA Mars Digital Topographic Map (DTM) files
Any topographic data file organized by rows and columns of elevation data"
3DEM is a product of Visualization Software LLC by Richard Horne distributed as freeware by Simtel.net

Free GIS Viewers from ESRI
ArcExplorer
"ArcExplorer is a lightweight GIS data viewer developed by ESRI. This freely available software offers an easy way to perform basic GIS functions. ArcExplorer is used for a variety of display, query, and data retrieval applications and supports a wide variety of standard data sources. It can be used on its own with local data sets or as a client to Internet data and map servers."
ArcReader
"ArcReader is a new addition to the ArcGIS Desktop family of products. It is a free, easy-to-use product that allows anyone to view, explore, and print published map files (PMFs). ArcReader was designed for viewing and sharing maps that access a wide variety of dynamic geographic data."

ArcExplorer Version 1.1 Import Utility
"An .e00 (E-zero-zero) file is an ArcInfo coverage converted into an ASCII text file intended for exchange between two ArcInfo systems on different platforms. They are not intended for compression, but they have become popular as exchange files. To convert an .e00 file to an ArcInfo coverage, download the ArcExplorer 1.1 Import Utility. The Import Utility works with ArcExplorer 2 as well."
