Algae And The Red Tide
There are times when algea grow fast in population or "bloom" & accumulate into dencevisible patches near the surface of the water."Red tide" is a common name "phenomenom" where a certain algae or phytoplankton species have reddish "pigments" in them and "bloom" so much that the water seems to be colored red. The name "red tide" is "thus" a misnomer because they have nothing to do with tides: usually their not harmful; and the ones that are, never reach the "densities" required to discolor the water.
