  1. Narrowing the possibilities to solve a mystery or make a scientific hypothesis.
  2. Narrowing geographic clues to make a hypothesis about location.
  3. Assuming that all clues are true.
  4. Distinguishing inconsistency due to error vs. at least one of the clues being untrue.
  5. Introducing the possibility of deception.
