iatoms
of the California Current System:
In the California Current System, the diatom
populations vary with the seasons. The total abundances of diatoms are
higher in the spring and fall as a result of optimum sunlight and nutrient
availability. Particular species are adapted to different environmental
conditions and the mix of species responds to environmental changes, including
those associated with changes in season. Take a look at the table below
to see species common to the California Current System. Each photograph
lists the species name, as well as any distinctive environmental preferences.
Under construction. Students will use this reference
later to analyze past climates.
