iatoms of the California Current System:
In the California Current System, the diatom populations vary with the seasons. The total abundances of diatoms are higher in the spring and fall as a result of optimum sunlight and nutrient availability. Particular species are adapted to different environmental conditions and the mix of species responds to environmental changes, including those associated with changes in season. Take a look at the table below to see species common to the California Current System. Each photograph lists the species name, as well as any distinctive environmental preferences.
