Eels are NOT jawless fishes

Illustration of an American Eel.
Eels may be elongate like hagfish, lampreys and conodonts, but they aren't nearly as primitive. If you look at their skeletal structure, they have typical jaws and bones for fishes. Many eels have pectoral fins although they lack pelvic fins. Eels are part of the large group of Teleost fishes. The lack of pelvic fins is due to loss of a feature over time rather than a primitive state before they were developed.
