Density
Density is a measure of the amount or quantity of matter (stuff) inside a three-dimensional space or volume.
An object can be very dense and weigh very little at the same time.
Weight depends on the total size of the object while density is an intrinsic property of a substance no matter its size or how much you have.
Observe & Discuss:
Notes
- Two-dimensional space is called an "area". Three-dimentional space is called a "volume".
Difference between density and weight
- Density is not exactly the same property as weight although it is related.
Usefulness of density
Units
- General - mass / volume or mass per unit volume
- Example english units - pounds per cubic foot
- Example metric units - grams per cubic centimeter
