GLOBAL WARMING: Sources of Information
- SIO (Scripps Institution of Oceanography) at UC San Diego
One of the leaders in studies of climate. Scripps researchers study everything from the reconstruction of past atmospheres trapped in polar ice cores to modeling of the future Earth’s climate system. Some sites of particular interest:
To learn more about climate change, Dr. Wolf Berger offers on-line course for the general public on climate change and climate history. These courses are offered through UCSD Extension and students receive college credit. To learn more log-on to www.extension.ucsd.edu and search the course catalog for “climate.”
- NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research)
Established in 1960, NCAR is located in Boulder, Colorado and focuses its research on atmospheric chemistry, meteorology, solar and solar-terrestrial physics, and climate. Some sites of note:
- LDEO (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) at Columbia University
A research division of Columbia University, LDEO was established in 1949. Its research areas span a range of subjects from earthquake studies to climate science. For an overview of the climate research at Lamont go to:

- Earth System Science Center at Penn State
Started only in 1985, the Earth System Science Center is another leader in climate research. Of particular note is the work being done by
- NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia University (GISS)
Established in 1961, the GISS works closely with Columbia University, as well as other research universities. GISS research may be roughly divided into global climate modeling, Earth observations (which includes the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Program [ISCCP]), climate impacts, planetary atmospheres, paleoclimate, radiation, atmospheric chemistry, and astrophysics. However, its current focus is on the issue of climate change. Some good GISS sites include:
